Granular Activated Carbon
carbon is a substance that has a long history of being used to absorb impurities and is perhaps the most powerful absorbent known to man. One pound of carbon contains a surface area of roughly 125 acres and can absorb literally thousands of different chemicals.
Activated carbon is carbon which has a slight electro-positive charge added to it, making it even more attractive to chemicals and impurities. As the water passes over the positively charged carbon surface, the negative ions of the contaminants are drawn to the surface of the carbon granules. Activated carbon filters used for home water treatment typically contain either granular activated carbon (GAC) or powdered block carbon.
Although both are effective, carbon block filters generally have a higher contaminant removal ratio. The two most important factors affecting the efficiency of activated carbon filtration are the amount of carbon in the unit and the amount of time the contaminant spends in contact with it. The more carbon the better. Similarly, the lower the flow rate of the water, the more time that contaminants will be in contact with the carbon, and the more absorption that will take place. Particle size also affects removal rates.
Activated carbon filters are usually rated by the size of the particles they are able to remove, measured in microns, and generally range from 50 microns (least effective) down to 0.5 microns (most effective). A typical counter-top or under-the-counter filter system has from 12 to 24 ounces of activated carbon. The most common carbon types used in water filtration are bituminous, wood, and coconut shell carbons. While coconut shell carbon typically costs 20% more than the others, it is generally regarded as the most effective of the three. All of our activated carbon filters use coconut shell carbon.

Depending on the optical activity: (+) - enantiomers rotate the plane of polarized light in clock wise direction. (-)- Enantiomers rotate the plane of polarized light in anti clock wise direction.
Depending on the configuration of atoms: Two optical isomers are named either D- or L- depending on the spatial configuration of atoms around the chiral centre with respect to glyceraldehydes molecule. Glyceraldehyde molecule is chiral a chiral compound and is historically used in D- and L- nomenclature system.
Quantity of one enantiomer of a molecule with respect to the other one is measured as enantiomeric excess (ee). Two enantiomeric partners of a molecule behave identically in all reactions, for example in HPLC and NMR. However, the difference creeps in the presence of other chiral molecules.
The phenomenon of chirality is of special interest because of its wide range of applications in various branches of chemistry like inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry and supramolecular chemistry. Many active molecules in biological system are chiral and best examples are certain naturally occurring amino acids and sugars. Chiral enzymes are able to distinguish between two enantiomers of a chiral substrate.

Chiral means relating to a molecule that is non superimposable with its mirror image.
The English letters E or F or D are all non superimposable mirror images of themselves ie none of these letters have an element of symmetry and so just like our two hands that are non superimposable mirror images of one another these alphabets are also non superimposable mirror image of themselves

The essential coditions for chirality in molecules of organic compounds is then summarised as :
1) there must be at least 1 C atom which is centrally bonded to 4 different atoms or groups of atoms , 2) there must not be any element of symmetry in the molecule , 3) the molecule and its mirror image must be non superimposable. 4 ) the chiral C must be sp3 hybridised.
