Top 5 Things to Consider When Buying A Guitar Amp
So you have just bought a brand spanking new electric guitar, but not sure what amp to go for? Then look no further. Our guide will run you through the top five things to consider when it comes to buying a guitar amp.
Budget: First things first, you need to consider your budget. Amps vary dramatically in price from £50 right through to £5,000. Generally speaking, the more you spend, the more powerful the amp is going to be. If you are looking to use your amp at venues then consider splashing out more. If you are looking to just use the amp at home or for band practise then an amp with a smaller price tag may be more suitable.
Power: As mentioned in the budget section, you should also consider power when buying a guitar amp. An amps power is measured in wattage. Amps can range from 3-watts up to 500+ watts, the more wattage you have the louder your amp is going to be. If you are planning to use your amp at large venues then we recommend you go for an amp with at least 200 watts. Medium sized venues and small concerts require less power and practise amps even less.
Portability: Where will you be using your amp? If you plan to use it outdoors or away from a power supply then you need to find a battery powered amp. If you are planning on travelling a lot with your guitar amp then you need something which is durable and easy to transport. Amps come in all different shapes and sizes, with some being easy to transport than others. You should also factor in how much it weighs too.
Effects: Are you looking for a simple clean sound, or do you want an amp chock full of effects? Combo amps usually come with built in effects such as reverb, flanger and delay. Some brands also add additional effect options such as Rolands COSM technology which replicates the sound of other amps, effectively creating a 4-in-1 guitar amp.
Input/Outputs: Do you want to plug in recording devices, headphones or perhaps a separate mic system so you can sing along as you're playing? When you are looking to buy a guitar amp check out the input/outputs – the majority come with a headphone input to allow you to play in silence. Other amps come with additional options such as the ability to plug in a foot pedal to switch channels or to plug in other instruments so you can both play through the same amp.
