Apron Sinks - How They Were Used in the Old Days
Others are turning to classics since they want to revive the designs that were popular in the olden days. One of the most functional kitchen designs that has been dug up from the past can be found in the revival of the apron sinks.
Apron or farmhouse sinks, used by nearly every household in every farmland all over the country about a hundred years ago, are now making a spectacular comeback in modern kitchens across the nation. The farmhouse sink is basically a larger and deeper version of the modern kitchen sink.
In the old days, these sinks were originally an important part of farmhouse kitchen's plumbing and can be found in abundance almost everywhere. They are made from a range of materials which include porcelain and copper.
The extra size and depth of farmhouse sinks were designed for the purpose of accommodating not only the large cooking pans used during the early farmland days, but the quantity of pans as well that were used at once. The huge volume of cooking pans accounts for the size of the meals prepared as well as the typically large number of household members to be fed.
The farmhouse sink was built to be functional, durable and easy to maintain, considering the huge number of other chores that needs to be done in a large farm. These sinks have distinguishing trademarks in the form of an "apron" on the sink's front panel that extends outward and beyond the wooden kitchen counter top.
The extended front lip allows any water which splashed over the sink's front side to drip directly to the floor and eliminate the possibility of water collecting on the kitchen counter top which can cause water damage to the wood. This unique attribute of apron front sinks make them a popular choice among country homes.
Though the design of the sink is a perfect complement to traditional kitchen, this does not mean that they cannot be used to adorn contemporary homes. In fact, more and more interior designers are now leaning towards the inclusion of apron sinks even in modern kitchens. Their classic appeal creates a beautiful contrast amongst the contemporary kitchen fixtures surrounding the area. And since these sinks can now be produced in a great array of designs, coordinating with all types of kitchen themes, décor, and setup will never be a problem anymore.

What should I bring my host family in Costa Rica?
They live on a small farm. There is a mother who is 38, and we are considering bringing her an apron from Anthropologie, which are about 38 dollars, and very nice. The husband is a driver, and he is 45, I don't know what to bring him. There is an 18 year old boy, and again, I don't know what to bring him. There is a 12 year old girl, should i bring her something like nail polish, or slippers( cute girly ones)? And last, there is an 8 year old girl, and I am thinking to get her something similar to what I get the 12 year old. I could get the girls books in Spanish from Barnes in Nobel, but I don't know what book would be good. And last, I am thinking to get them a family gift of linens or towels. My mom lived in a foreign country, and was poor when she was young, so she thinks towels would be nice. Also, I may bring a little candy, but candy in america is not great, and I really want to bring actual things instead of food. Also, I'm a girl and 14, if it makes a difference. thank you

The husband, you could get him some gloves or a hat or something, considering you don't really know his personality well.
The boy, you could get him something sort of like the father's. to show him you value him as a man also.
For the girls, slippers or maybe a cute little girls beauty basket would be very sweet, and as for a family gift, i think something very classy and formal like a potted plant or something would be nice. I wouldn't bring candy.
