Skip Shift Eliminator

The Skip Shift Eliminator is a ‘plug and play' module for cars. The purpose of a Skip Shift Eliminator is to disable the Computer Aided Gear Selection System or CAGS in the car. The Computer Aided Gear Selection is a EPA modification to force better mileage out of a car. If a car is travelling between 15 and 19 miles per hour with the throttle at less than 21% and the engine coolant hotter than 169°F, the computer automatically causes the solenoid mounted behind the shifter to activate and extend, thus tripping the CEL/MIL. When this solenoid is activated and extended, the shifter cannot be moved into the second gear. This will force the driver to shift into fourth gear (but the driver can actually shift into any other gear as well), which is the most fuel efficient position for the car. The Skip Shift Eliminator is very popular in powerful muscle cars. The kit works on all T56 equipped six speed manual transmission LS1/LS2 cars.

Installing this kit is very easy. All you need is a skip shift wiring harness, floor jacks and stands or a set of ramps. The whole process takes only about ten to fifteen minutes. One big reason why a lot of people prefer this set up is because it looks very professional and is hard to notice. Most dealerships fail to notice it when the car is taken for servicing the transmission.
The process of setting the Skip Shift Eliminator kit is outlined below:

1. The front of the car has to be raised so that the transmission can be worked with. Using rhino ramps has been found to be the most effective for this procedure. Care should be taken to lock in the emergency brakes and immobilize the rear wheels.
2. One has to place himself under the car on the driver's side so as to reach the transmission.
3. The Skip Shift solenoid is located high on the transmission and towards the front of the car. There are two other solenoids in the driver's side of the transmission. The one you are looking for is the one nearest the engine.
4. The tab on the solenoid is to be lifted carefully. It has to be pulled back, thus unplugging the solenoid.
5. Next, the skip shift wiring harness has to be attached. One end goes into the transmission and the other is plugged into the wire end. Both ends are different so that the harness can go in only one way.
6. The car can then be taken off the stands and taken for a test drive. The proper way to test it is to pull out slowly and make the skip shift light activate so that the car can be taken to the second gear to make sure that the kit works.

The most common mistake that people make while setting this up is to go for the wrong solenoid. In that, the whole process can be redone. And one should be warned that one has to be very close to the transmission case and the exhaust system while installing the kit. These systems get very hot while driving. One should do the installation only when these parts sufficiently cool.
