Choosing an ID Badge Holder That Works For You

While installing a bath grab bar one of the long wood screws became totally stripped when it was halfway in.?

Wont go in or come out. This phillips screw is quite unsightly but not really needed since the other two screws went in successfully. What should I do? Can't cut it off flush due to its position in the bar holder.

I assume that because you are screwing this into wood that the head has stripped and not the threads. Grab the head with a pair of vice grips... They are a type of wrench that can clamp down on things and lock into place. They are easily availabe at any hardware store and even the household tools sections of grocery stores...

Adjust the vice grips so that the clamp on the head with enough force to allow you to turn the screw and back the screw out...

Get a replacement screw that is the same width but just a little bit longer than the old screw... Only instead of a phillips or allen screw (I'm assuming this is what it was as phillips and allen type screws always strip), use a regular screw (that a flat head screw driver fits). Flat head screws are harder to keep the screw driver on, but you can apply more torque to them without them stripping. The longer size will give the new screw better grip in case you've stripped out the hole that you had the old screw in - common in cases where you've hit a knot in the wood.

Make sure you use the same type of screw head shape (flat or round head) so that it matches the style of your grab bar.

I do not recommend leaving the screw out. It may seem tight now, but it will start to wobble and come loose over time if you only have one screw holding it on one end.

Drilling a pilot hole that is narrower than the screw will help ease the entry of the new screw. If you have the tools to do this, then it would be the right thing to do. However, using a screw that accepts a flat head screw driver will probably work if you don't happen to have a $35 electric drill lying around.

Sometimes I run a nail into the wood where I plan to screw and then pull the nail out again. This creates a nice, cheap, pilot hole, but could be hazardous if you are nailing around tile (you don't want to break your tile.

So if a pilot hole isn't an option, don't worry... just use a screw that accepts a regular flat head style screw driver.

One problem that occurs when removing stripped screw heads is that sometimes the head of the screw itself can pull off. Removal will become ugly at this point. This will also work if the screw is in too tight for vice grips to work.

This will require a nail puller (pincer type) or the nail puller on the back of your hammer (if you have room to reach it on the side of your railing) or a any other claw type nail puller. The claw will have to be hammered into the screw shaft so that it can grip it without the aid of the screw head (if it is no longer attached).

Back up whatever you use to pry this out with using a thin piece of 1x wood against your bathroom wall when you pry on it so you don't damage your wall and then go back in with a longer screw as described above... A short 1X4 or a scrap piece of floor molding will work.

The top half of the hole will be stripped once you get the old screw out with this method. So a longer screw will definately be needed.
