i need help on how to drill through oak?
hi was wondering how i could drill through oak without using a drill press. i am using oak 1x2's on the back of the wall in a closet to put the oak shelf on. i purchased a drill press to predrill the holes. i found my studs on the wall first and i realized that at the corners my drill will not fit to drill the screws in .i would have to drill it in at an angle and i have the little bosch impact drill. i cannot use the drill press to make the predrilled holes at the corners since i cant go in straight.
I just dont know how i am suppose to do this. i am a female and i tried to drill through oak with my drill and it wouldnt go in it was so hard. is it possible to drill holes using this bosch inpact drill at the corners at an angle? what do i use to do this ?
Babyfr, I grew up managing the hardware store you might say and number one why are you pointing out that you are female? Does that make you less able to do the job you are trying to do? A drill or a piece of oak doesn't care either way. You need to buy the correct drill bit first as yours is probably dull and made for metal. Use a Brad Point drill bit. They are real sharp and the point helps to start the hole with out moving. You could also use a hand screwdriver (stubby) for the corners. Now, they do make something for tight corners.It is made by Black and Decker and it is called a flexible Shaft. It bends anyway you want it to and you attach your bit to one end, then put the other end into your drill. Those were kind of expensive twenty five years ago so I hate to think of what they cost today. They also sell drills that reach into tight corners if you want to spend the money on one. They also make angled screwdrivers hand held ones. They come in Philips and Slotted. They have a bit on each end that is bent to allow for tight corners you normally can not reach.Why are you using oak for supporting strips? The oak won't make them support any better than pine would. It all depends on how they are attached to the wall.You drill the supports first,then mark the wall where they are going to be attached. You could use a awl or sharp nail to start the hole into the stud. The screw should take care of the rest as the threads of a wood screw pulls its self into the wall as it is being turned. Maybe you should rethink your project a little bit. Good Luck
