Brilliant Glass Door Knobs - Finding Replacements for Modern Doors
Long ago, perhaps a century or so ago - brilliant crystal and glass doorknobs with mirrored centers were standard issue in all new construction. Some of the more rare knobs have turned from crystal clear to various colors - a happy unplanned accident. Rather than use trace amounts of lead to clarify the glass, some manufacturers found it less expensive to use Manganese or Selenium. The result - when exposed to sunlight over many decades, the Manganese caused the glass doorknobs to turn purple while Selenium caused them to turn Amber.
