How to Choose a Car Garage for Repairs and Servicing
There are hundreds of car garages in York and across the UK so how do you know which one to choose?
Car servicing and repairs are a necessary evil, but you shouldn't feel like you have been ripped off. Of course you may not know what the problem is so you may need to get the car checked out at a garage first. Depending on your vehicle you have a choice of garages- ones that specialise in certain brands, ones that focus solely on bodyshop work or servicing and garages that will do anything and these will be garages that are part of a larger group or are independent.
To avoid nasty surprises it's important that you choose a reputable garage that won't try and charge the earth or for unnecessary work! To determine if a garage is reputable you should check if they are a member of a recognised trade association, as a member they have to adhere to a strict code of practice. The Motor Vehicles Repairers Association, Motor Codes Limited and Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association are the three main motoring repair associations.
Take your car to a few garages and get written quotes for any work, all good garages will be happy to provide a written quote and explain what work is required. It's a good idea to do some internet research to find out how much you should expect to pay for quoted work. Unless the work is extremely urgent you should always get quotes from a number of garages before settling on one. Recommendations from family and friends should also help find the garages to avoid! Remember as well you often get what you pay for so check with the garage that gives you the cheapest price that they use genuine manufacturer approved parts.
Often franchised service centres and garages will offer great deals on parts and servicing so it's worth checking out the ones in your area online. You might find that you get ‘loyalty' deals with these garages if you choose to use them again, although you might find independent garages will offer you good deals too.
Once you have picked a garage any work and costs should be agreed in writing, you should make sure you understand what all the costs are for ( its worth checking if VAT is included). If you are unhappy with the service, all garages that are member of trade associations will be more than happy to deal with your complaint.
