Makita LXT lithium battery technology

The Makita LXT range of Cordless Industrial Power Tool kits is designed around their industry leading Lithium Batteries. These rechargeable cells are designed to negate the drawbacks of earlier nickel based batteries commonly found in cordless power tools. Lithium basedMakita LXT power tools are considerably smaller and lighter because of the advancements in Lithium Battery technology.

Batteries, until recently, used in Cordless Power Tools have generally been one of two types; Nickel-Cadmium (NiCD) or Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH). Both these batteries are efficient, though NiMH batteries have become far more commonly used throughout the trade as they can hold higher amperage capacities and have little or no memory restrictions for the same physical size as original NiCD batteries, both types of battery cell offer reasonably fast charging and strong output, strong enough to engage most Cordless Power Tools for longer than their charge cycle.

Being based on the same nickel technology both NiCD and NiMH batteries have some flaws which can make them less than ideal for a company involved in construction or engineering needing a reliable power source for their Cordless Power Tools. Nickel based batteries have a higher tendency to discharge while being stored, meaning that even if the battery was fully charged, within only a week or so it may become too low in charge to run even the smaller 10mm Cordless Drills. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that as NiCD and NiMH batteries discharge they suffer from power band drop off, so as you use your Cordless Drills or Impact Drivers they will be more likely to jam due to lack of remaining power in the battery, or in the case of Circular Saws or Jigsaws they can start producing rougher cuts as the speed of the motor reduces. Additionally NiCD cells suffer from the so-called "memory effect", this is where the full charge point of the battery reduces over time, the charge capacity of the cell seems to be reduced and is often caused by the charging of the battery without allowing a full discharge, or removing the battery from the charger before full charge has been reached. This lack of power per charge is extremely common on a busy site where many tradesmen are using the same set of batteries.

Lithium-Ion Technology, such as the Makita BL1830 lithium battery, used throughout the 18v Makita LXT range of Cordless Power Tools and Industrial Power Tools kits, negates many of these drawbacks. A big advantage with the BL1830 is that Lithium Batteries do not suffer a drop off in power towards the end of the discharge cycle so they can be used longer without risk to operators or the job itself. Lithium also eliminated the problems of memory effect, allowing quick charging and topping up at any point of the cycle without disturbing the battery memory. The integrated technology in the lithium cells allows considerably greater charge cycles, outperforming their NiCD and NiMH equivalents many many times over

Makita with their LXT range of cordless power tools have used the smaller and lighter Lithium Batteries technology to manufacture compact, lightweight industrial power tools that impart less strain and fatigue on the operator, this allows greater efficiency and safety when working throughout the shift. The short charge cycles and more robust power bands from Makita LXT lithium batteries in conjunction with their market leading Makita LXT Lithium Power Tools increases overall site and operator efficiency and makes LXT lithium powered Makita Power Tools strong contenders for any construction or engineering company wishing to upgrade their current inventory of cordless power tools.

Lithium or Ni Cad batteries?

I am deciding whether or not to store my cordless telephones in the recharge cradle or outside the cradle. These cordless telephones are powered by either a Nickel Cadmium or Lithium batteries. (Neither of the batteries identify as which.) :-(
Does it make any difference how / where I store these two telephones? - I hope to keep each battery life as long as I can to full power capacity.
%I have been storing each telephone OUTSIDE it's recharge cradle in attempt to discharge each battery and recharge it from a full discharge state. Is this still "the prescribed technique" as it was when the NiCad battery first came onto the public attention?

It really depends on your phone model and, more importantly, the battery type it uses.

If it were NiCad, modern NiCads still have the memory effect when you don't discharge completely. Your prescribed technique would still be the best way to maintain a long life. They can be somewhat reconditioned when affected by the memory effect by fully discharging and fully charging a few times.

If your telephone is a bit newer, it will most likely have a NiMH battery. Nickel metal hydride batteries do not suffer from memory (according to some manufacturers). Your phone might have a smart charger that senses when the battery is full which then switching to a low charge rate to maintain full charge.

If you definitely have a Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer battery in your phone then you can definitely leave it charged all the time. These battery chemistries REQUIRE smart chargers for safety reasons. They would blow up if they were over charged. They also don't suffer from any memory effect whatsoever. It is actually preferable to top them off after usage as a severe discharge will damage them.
