who has the final say on costumes?
I've wondered about something as far as costumes are concerned. Maybe someone might know? Does the director have the final say or the costume designer? For instance, I liked how Reese Witherspoon was dressed in Pleasantville, wearing cardigan sweaters tucked tightly into belted skirts. Most of the other women characters just wore their blouses tucked, not the sweaters. Anyway, Gary Ross wrote and directed the movie but Juliana Makovsky designed the costumes. Did Gary Ross say "I want Reese Witherspoon's sweaters tucked" or was that up to Juliana Makovsky?
Who has the final say on costumes?
Technically the producer or artistic director hires both director and designers. They must all work together as a team. Ideally, the costume designer will seek imput from the director and other designers. For instance, the lighting and set designers also need to coordinate so that lights don't wash out certain colors, or a character doesn't wear a costume that matches the walls of the set, etc.
These artistic decisions are made throughout a process of production meetings where everyone gets together to discuss their ideas and artistic visions for the production.
In the end, they all offer input to each other, but the costumer would never tell the director how to stage the show, and the director isn't expected to tell the costumer how to do their job either. It is a collaboration.
The director might suggest colors, or textures, or accessories. The costumer might offer several samples for the director to choose from, etc.
If their is a stalemate of the minds whan it comes to an artistic decision, the producer or artistic director or managing director will make the final say - usually based on budget or practicality.
Actors are allowed to provide suggestions of sorts and make character choices within the discretion of the director, but in the end, the actor wears what the costumer provides - period.
