Tub Drain Repair Made Easy
If you have a problem with your bathtub filling up with water when you take a shower, or maybe the water drains out when you're taking a bath, you may need to repair your bathtub drain. Each of these problems can be caused by a faulty drain and can easily be repaired by the average homeowner. A few simple tools and a little bit of knowledge is all you need to repair your bathtub drain.
When you look at your bathtub drain, is there a level that will move the drain plug up and down? Or maybe you have a drain that you need to manually move up and down. This unlevered drain is the easiest type to repair, so we will discuss that one first. To remove the unlevered drain, simply lift the stopper up and turn it in a clockwise motion to release it. Using some adjustable pliers may make this a bit easier to do. Remove the stopper and clear out any of the gunk that has built up in the drain. Once you do this, you can run hot water down the pipe to clean anything else that is left. Now, place the new drain into the tub.
If your drain is a levered drain, this is going to take a bit more work, but can still be fixed easily. First you will need to open the drain as far as it will go using the lever. Then take the stopper and rock it gently back and forth until it can be removed from the tub. Once you have done this you will want to unscrew the lever plate and lift the assembly out of the drain. After you have removed everything, you will need to repeat the cleaning process again before you replace the drain and lever. Scrub the lever assembly clean with a wire brush to help remove any build-up. If the linkage is damaged, you can easily buy a replacement at your local hardware store. After everything is cleaned off and the linkage is replaced, screw the level plate back in. Place the new bathtub stopper into place and gently rock it back and forth until it reattaches to the linkage. Test your work by moving the lever back and forth to see if it is working.
It's easy to save a lot of money if you can do these simple home repairs yourself. If this is your first do it yourself plumbing project, it may take you a few hours to complete, however once you have become a more experienced do-it-yourselfer, projects like this won't take you much time at all. Before you do any repairs, be sure that there isn't anything blocking the drain causing the problem. You can do this after you've pulled the stopper out. If anything is blocking the drain and causing the stopper to not seal properly, you can use a wire hanger to remove the blockage.
