How do Air Source Electric Heat Pumps Work?
Air source electric heat pumps are usually heaters that are used in moderate temperatures, as opposed to freezing cold. These are also heaters best used for homes where there are fewer cold days and milder winter weather in general. As you can tell by the name, these types of pumps do use a heavy amount of electricity. The advantages of air source electric heat pumps lie in this technology’s energy efficiency. Energy efficiency means that you as a consumer pay less per month than other technologies such as dual-fuel heat pumps or geothermal heat pumps.
The major disadvantage with this type of technology is that it has a relatively high cost at first due to equipment you have to purchase. However, in the long run these pumps tend to be the least expensive to maintain. Besides price, another drawback to be aware of with air source electric heat pumps is that they cannot function in all types of weather, as effectively as the two other technologies can.
The heat produced by this technology of system can be compromised whenever the temperature outside reaches -90C. In addition, high winds can sometimes affect performance. Usually, experts recommend that you keep a backup system ready just in case you get inclement weather that disturbs the air source electric heat pumps system.
Nevertheless, these pump systems do offer reversal systems with air conditioning. Therefore, they are popular for mainstream homeowners. These systems use the difference between outdoor air temperatures as well as indoor temperatures. Historically, these systems are easy to learn and install for the average consumer. Their limitations are intrinsic to the design. They use the outside air as a heat source. Therefore, the higher temperature differential (thanks to extremes in temperature) will lead to a lower quality performance.

Compared to a propane gas furnace, how is an electric heat pump? I hear that it's better to have a propane gas furnace as backup, but using primarily the electric heat pump will save a lot on energy bills. But I have also heard that the electric heat pumps don't provide adequate heat sometimes.
