How do Photoluminescent Exit Signs differ from other Exit Signs?
Fire exit signs are a ubiquitous part of our everyday lives, especially if we spend much time in commercial buildings. From California to New York, they hang above exit doors and remind us of what we already know: that we’re about to leave the building. Yet, while all exit signs serve the same function, they differ markedly in terms of cost effectiveness, durability and environmental friendliness, making it worthwhile for companies to examine their options before purchasing new exit signs or deciding to keep the ones that they have.
There are three basic kinds of illuminated exit signs on the market today: incandescent, compressed fluorescent, LED, Tritium and Photoluminescent. Incandescent exits signs are the most common. Using light bulbs and back up batteries, they’re wired to certain location and require maintenance on their light bulbs, batteries and, occasionally, their wiring. These characteristics also apply to compressed fluorescent exit signs, the only difference being that they use fluorescent lighting instead of incandescent. LED exit signs also use wiring and back up batteries, but they use less electricity than incandescent and compressed fluorescent signs by using crystals to magnify a smaller amount of light to create the same lighting effect. Tritium exit signs, on the other hand, are non-electrical, making them technically maintenance free. But when Tritium signs expire, the fact that they’re powered by capsules containing radioactive material can make them expensive to dispose of. Like Tritium signs, photoluminesc ent exit signs—also called “eco friendly” and “self-sustaining” exit signs— are non-electrical; however, unlike tritium signs, they require no investment beyond their initial purchase price, making them the most cost effective of all exit signs. In fact, studies show that companies who replace 100 incandescent exit signs with photoluminescent signs will save over $3500 per year.
While photoluminescent exits signs are often called eco-friendly, they are realistically eco-perfect. Photoluminescence occurs when an object absorbs photons from its environment and then re-emits them, producing a bright glowing effect. Self-sustaining exit signs are engineered to absorb photons from ambient light and then re-emit them for an extended period of time in darkened surroundings, and when their length lifespan of 25 years expires, all you have to do is drop them in a recycling bin, which is certainly not the case with other exit signs.
Self-sustaining exit signs are often championed for their recyclability, non-toxicity and cost saving effect to the relative exclusion of their superior durability. Unlike electrical exit signs whose bulbs, wiring, and batteries have been known to fail in emergency situations, self-sustaining exit signs are able to withstand stand shock and generator failures with no ill effects. Perhaps the greatest to the signs’ durability is the city ordinance enacted by New York City after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Immediately following the explosion, the electrical back up lighting in the World Trade Center’s stairwells failed due to generator failure. Consequently, the city began requiring all buildings over 75 feet tall to install photoluminescent exit signs and egress markings in their stairwells.
Eco-friendly exit signs are a must have for companies that are going green, but they are also a smart choice for any company that wants to insure the safety of its workers and cut power costs.
