Franke Fireclay sinks are all crafted by hand, and many are crafted by world famous ceramic firm Villeroy and Boch who have been making fine ceramic for over 260 years. These sinks are both beautiful and functional and make a welcome addition to any kitchen.
Fireclay Sinks are made by injecting liquid ceramic (also referred to as the slip and comprised of quartz, china clay or ball clay, and chamotte) into porous plaster molds at high pressure. When not quite dry, the fragile pieces are smoothed with coarse and smooth sponges to create an even surface. Tap fitting holes and waste outlet are then punched out according to the individual design of the particular sink which is immediately followed by the first manual total quality inspection. The sink is then dried at room temperature for up to several days before a final drying in the dryer reaches a maximum temperature of 160 degrees for 40 hours.
After the sink is dry, a final glaze is sprayed onto the surface and closely monitored for consistency and uniformity. The sink is then fired in a kiln at 2,200 degrees for 20 hours before the craftsman makes the final inspections. The sink is tested to stringent guidelines using calibrated testing equipment. Interestingly, the firing process can result in linear shrinkage of up to 5% which may yield a 2% final variance in the size of each sink. For this reason, many professional kitchen installers want the sink before cutting any countertop surfaces. The sink is then carefully packed to prevent damage during transport.
