ok, so im building a small outboard out of a 31cc ryobi weed wacker. its just for a small dingy that fits 2 people and most of the time im the only one in it. i use it for fishing on a very calm lake with no wake from other boats and no waves. i wanna know what kinda mileage i can expect. just round about
Not a new idea. The reason you don't see many used as an outboard is that they simply make tiny power, but I have seen some surprisingly effective long-tail type set-ups made with a lot of effort. Using conventional gearbox outboard drives does not work - too much resistance. Performance is like slow rowing with a slippery hull, slower rowing with a tinny or inflatable.... Mileage is irrelevant - currents and slip losses in wind and waves make any such calculations theoretical rather than practical. Fuel burn per hour @ Speed over water is the general standard, i.e. 2l per hour @ WOT (wide open throttle) and maximum speed, or 1l per hour @ HOT (half open throttle) and whatever speed you are doing then and so on. If you know your fuel burn per hour, and the speed for that throttle setting, you can accurately predict how far over the water you can go in a certain time at that speed. Then you can see if the water was moving a different direction with you on it during that time..... Also if you know that you can only ever go for a certain time before you reach the other side, you can accurately work out how many times you can do that in a day based on the fuel available to you. Mileage is simply your operating limit - the general rule is to finish the day with a third in reserve, with a little tiny engine like that you will not use much so you might just keep 5l on-board and top up as needed. Those engines are not designed to run flat out for hours on end, but will work for a while. You will find them very noisy in that use, and the exhaust is possibly going to point the wrong way. It's a good project if you have nothing better to do.
