I have a Climatrol furnace that's probably 20-25 years old. What should my new limit switch be safely set to?

I currently have it at 90, 150 and 200. Is that safe?

This is real hard to answer because this setting is affected by the whole system. The size of the furnace, the btu rating, the blower size, the ducting size, filtration, the size of the house, all influence the settings.

I assume you mean fan Off 90, fan On 150, and limit 200. Sounds okay for an old cast iron furnace but the last two sound high imo for one of your generation.

If you can find your model number plate, the limit and heat rise is usually stated there. That should tell you the upper limit.

I think 60 degrees differential between fan on and off is too much. Higher efficiency units run 30-40 degrees and use a heater on the switch to kick it on early for efficiency.

I think 85, 130, 180 or 190 might be more normal for a furnace of that generation. The limit could be even less depending on the model and type.

But all you can do is test.

If the fan off is set too high you will get a residual heat cycle. This means during cool down it didn't remove all the heat and after it shuts off the fan will come back on for a few minutes to remove the leftover heat. A dirty filter or blower wheel also can increase the chances of that.

In some applications, like a furnace too big for the ducting, a residual heat cycle is unavoidable after a long run time. There is always some residual heat, that is why you have the differential.

If the fan off is too low, it doesn't shut off or blows a long time before it does. Blowing air feels cool so this is undesireable when heating. But you want it as low as you can to remove all the heat in to the house.

If the fan on setting is too high you could limit out and it is harder on the furnace to heat it higher before the fan comes on. And more heat goes up the chimney before it kicks on the fan.

If the differential is too close and it doesn't warm up enough before the fan comes on then when starting to heat the fan will come on, go off, warm again, maybe several times before staying on.

Sorry, but because it takes in consideration the whole system there is no set answer other than upper limit which should be marked.
