Ultraviolet Clarifiers And Sand Filters. Some Basic Facts
As daylight hours lengthen, the water warms up and free floating single cell algae thrive. This is particularly true when a pond is well filtered. The nitrate content rises and additional food is available for the microscopic plants. The result is an algal bloom and the water turns green.
Ultraviolet clarifiers operating in the germicidal region of the UV light spectrum can be incorporated into koi pond systems to kill the algae and keep green water at bay. The algae are killed when they pass close by the ultraviolet light radiated from the lamp. The dead cells flocculate out and settle on the pond or filter floor.
The UV lamp has a limited usable life of about six months, so change it regularly for the best effect, ideally spring. At the same time, clean the quartz sleeve to ensure maximum efficiency from the lamp. The quartz sleeve separates the lamp from the water flowing past it.
Take care when handling quartz tubes, as they are very brittle and will crack easily. Disconnect the UV unit from the power supply before changing the tube or cleaning the quartz sleeve. Do not switch the unit on again until it is reassembled, because light from the lamp can damage your eyes.
Because UVC designs vary, it is difficult to calculate the size of unit required for a pond. Check the manufacturer's instructions before making any decisions. These pressure units have been in use in the swimming pool industry for many years. They can be included in a koi pond installation to provide fine polish to the water after it leaves the filter.
To prevent them from blocking, they will need back flushing to waste on a regular basis. This operation usually needs a pressure pump for efficient cleansing. The sand they contain will also need changing from time to time.

germicidal lamp producing ozone?
there s a 30w uvc lamp installed in the attic directly over my room apparently to kill some molds but doesnt uvc produce ozone? and isnt ozone toxic? also there s bits of tape that went flaky in attic so i presume the light broke it down but could it produce any fumes? there s no windows as such in the attic so whatever comes from there goes through my room!
should i worry?
The thing to remember about UV light is that some wavelengths create ozone, others destroy it. 254 nm UV is generally the accepted wavelength that is needed to create ozone, and many lamps are not targeted specifically for it.
The UV method, in general, does not create as much ozone as other methods. In your case, with a 30W UV lamp in the attic there should be very little ozone present upstairs to begin with. When you then factor in the short half life of ozone, and the fact that it reacts with almost any substance it comes into contact with, there should be no ozone that makes down from there.
If you are still concerned about it, try to seal up any openings to the attic to prevent drafts from coming down. As you mentioned mold in the attic, sealing off that air might help prevent mold spores from making their way down to your area - that would be my main concern.
Inexpensive ozone badges do exist that indicate whether an area is within OSHA mandated safe levels for ozone. You could use one in the attic, then another in your room. Any readings you do pick up should be minimal, if noticeable at all. You could pick up one of those if you'd like - just search for ozone badge.
