How to Set-Up Your New Aquarium

When you are planning to install an aquarium in your home the best and the simplest way will be to first buy a fifteen, twenty or if you want a bigger one, then a 29 gallon fish tank made of glass. Along with that particular air-driven gravel filter as well as a plastic tank top. You may also need a heater to maintain the perfect water temperature inside the tank. But if you want to be a little economical at the beginning you can go for an incandescent light instead of a fluorescent. In terms of fish tank accessories if you beginner it will be best for you to choose wood or plastic plants, stone or ceramic decorations which are available in almost any pet shop. When you go out to buy these things you will see that most of the shops have them (except decoration) and also offer you at a reasonable and discounted price. One important item related to your aquarium set up is the stand upon which the tank will remain. You must get a stand which is capable of bearing the weight of your fish tank.

When you have got all the necessary things or setting up your aquarium the process of installing is quite simple. First decide the place where you want to place your aquarium. Place it in such a place where you can enjoy the fish in a relaxing manner. While finalizing the place be careful to see that you are placing it in a place where it will not get much direct sunlight which is essential for controlling algae.

After that, put your tank on the stand and check to see if there is good contact between the fish tank and the stand. Then see what kind of filter you have. If it is an Under Gravel Filter (UGF), then you will have to place it now. It will go to the bottom of the tank. You need to place the lift tubes of the filter in their sockets. You can see the set up instructions written on the that container.

Before putting inside the tank, you need to first rinse your filter thoroughly. Also see that lowest point of the gravel is near the front of the tank.

However, if your filter is not UGF and it goes inside the fish tank, you can now make it ready and place it into the tank. Make sure that you wash everything with cool water before putting inside the tank.

When this task is over, you can move on and add the heater as well as the water pump if you require. First decide a location inside the tank for your pump but remember that you need to place it above the water level. This is required because if you do not do this water can drain back out through the air tube when the power goes off resulting in the damage of the pump along with other things. However, if you find it difficult to place the air pump over the tank water level, you can get yourself some check-valves for the air line. You can also see the instructions which have come with your filter to check how to connect the air line with the air stones. But if your filter is not an UGF you must check to see whether that filter needs an air pump connected or not and also how to attach one. Again, if you are operating your filter with a power head, and not with an air pump, you must place remember to place that power head on top of the lift tube following the instructions on the package. Make SURE that your pumps and. You must do it by reading instructions in the box of your filter.

Now that you are done with the set up of your aquarium you can now concentrate on decorating it. You need to place your decorations inside the tank at this point and check how they are looking. One thing that you must remember is that plastic and ceramic decorations will always entrap air and will float as you put water in the tank. So do not be surprised when it happens to you.

Once you are done with putting your decorations inside the tank, you can w put the top of the fish tank. If you have bought a glass top or an integrated plastic top it is very simple. These are made in such a way that it is easy to cut the back side according to your need in order to make room for power cords, filters, heaters as well as air lines. Just do it with a pair of scissors or a knife

Now you are in a position to add water to your new fish tank. You can directly pour water into it without treating it as you do not have any fish or plant at present. You can add any treatment when the tank is full. For pouring water you can use any bowel or any other thing from your kitchen. When your tank gets filled you should let it remain in that way for an hour or two so that your air stones are saturated. Turn your air pump as well as the water heater. It is always advisable to wait for one or two days before putting any fish inside because in the meantime the inside temperature will stabilize and you can also make sure that there are no leaks in your fish tank.

What does it mean if your fish swims around the top of its round glass goldfish bowl sucking at the top?

Im worried he doesnt have enough oxegen or something, does this mean i have to put less water in the bowl?
By the way he's an angel fish, the bowl is quite large, I clean it out once a week and to the person who said fish dont need oxegen, they do. If you put a fish in a bowl of water and covered it, the fish would die. Fish need oxegen, just not in the way we do. Other than that, good answers, keep them coming and thanks!

I can't believe none of the people who answered this question actually realized you have an angelfish in a bowl. What it means is your angelfish is dying.

Angels are tropical fish and come from South America where the water temps are in the high 70' and low 80's. In a bowl, the temp will fluctuate from day to night and unless you keep you house heated in the 80's, it is way too cold for a tropical fish. The constant temp fluctuation causes stress which compromises the fish's immune system allowing opportunistic diseases and parasites to enter the fish's body and eventually kill it.

Angels are delicate fish and very susceptible to poor water quality. You need to get a 10 gallon aquarium at the very least and it should have a filter and a heater. It should cost you around $30. A small price to pay for your pet's life and health.

Your fish is very close to dying from temperature related stress problems not to mention lack of proper oxygen saturation in a bowl.
