Can I swap out a 15 amp electrical receptacle for a 20amp on a 20 amp breaker?
My house is newer so I'm pretty sure it is up to code and I've triple checked that the plug is on a 20 amp on the breaker box (the fuse says it's a 20). Am I correct that 20 amp circuits must be wired to support the 20 amp receptacle? I'm installing a commercial grade treadmill so I need to ensure that it can handle the load. Thanks
The treadmill came with a plug that has one horizontal prong which started my dilemma. The input info is as follows: 120V 60HZ 18A 0431. I changed the receptacle to the 20 Amp and it seems to work fine-I'm just worried to get on it for an hour and possibly run into problems. I am concerned about the wiring in the walls overheating. If the circuit in the breaker box is 20 amps shouldn't the wiring support that?
The answers about wire size are generally correct. For a 20 amp circuit, you must have 12 gauge wire. It is a code violation to install a 20 amp receptacle on a 15 amp circuit (see National Electrical Code Table 210.21(B)(3)).
The big concern here is that your treadmill has a nameplate rating of 18 amps. (which is why it came from the factory with a 20 amp plug). This tells me that it should have its own dedicated 20 amp circuit. Running this on an existing circuit is almost certainly going to overload the circuit and trip the breaker. As long as the breaker does its job, you should not burn anything up. But, the more you have to go reset it, the less likely it is to function properly. Then you will have a major problem on your hands.
Please get a licensed electrician in to add a new circuit and receptacle for your treadmill.
