how to maintain granite floor at home?
Of all the natural stone commonly used for flooring, granite is perhaps the easiest to take care of. Since it is fairly resistant to attack by acids, it is frequently used in kitchens. Orange juice, lemonade, or vinegar spilled on a marble floor will etch the surface in a hurry unless it is neutralized and cleaned up immediately. Although most granite is resistant damage caused by these spills, the grout may not be. Whatever type of stone used for any floor, it is always a good idea to clean up spills quickly and completely.
Since most granite is highly polished to bring out the color in the stone, it must be kept clean. Any grit or dirt on the floor will act as sandpaper under your shoes as you walk on the floor. As the polished surface becomes scratched, paths of travel will quickly become evident if the floor is not kept clean. There are commercial products available that you can spray on your dustmop that will "wick up" the dirt and dust rather than just moving it around.
Most granite care instructions recommend that a polished granite floor be buffed periodically to restore the shine. Again, commercial polishing/buffing compounds are available. In busy commercial environments, granite floors may be buffed weekly. In most residential environments, once or twice a year is sufficient.
I can tell you from experience that granite is a lot easier to take care of than marble, limestone, or travertine. My best advice is to get specific recommendations from a reputable flooring dealer that has experience with natural stone floors. They will usually have a line of cleaners and polish applicable to your type of floor. Some of them will rent buffing machines. Some of them will provide a cleaning/buffing/polishing service for a reasonable fee.
You do not mention the color of your granite floor. A special word of caution is in order if you have a green granite or granite like floor. Water can have a dramatic effect on this color. For that reason, this color is never recommended for outdoor applications. It is OK indoors, but don't let water stand on the floor for any length of time or it will discolor the floor.
