What does a game need to be considered a true classic?
It's very easy: what criteria do games need to meet to be considered timeless classics? Is it because it sets the bar higher for the whole industry? Visually, should games be measured by how far they push the hardware they run on or by the art direction?
And most of all, just because it's fun, does it make it an instant classic?
I'm writing an essay on the topic and would like to know other people's opinions.
The one major defining characteristic of a classic game is that it can stand the test of time. It has to transcend generations of games and its players. So no, it's visual style or technical prowess are unimportant because just like beauty, they fade with age.
It's important that a game is extremely fun to play, ideally simple to pick up, and will continue to be fun no matter how much it is "obsoleted" by technology.
A great example of one of the most classic games of all time that still proves to be extremely fun though it is technically really primitive is Tetris. It was a simple game, extremely addicting and fun to play, and even though it was made in 1985 and it is extremely dated; people still play it in droves. It's the one game that's practically on every gaming system, and is one of the most purchased games for mobile phones.
