The Uses of Industrial Refrigeration
If you are considering going back to school you may find that there are a lot of class offerings and even job postings related to refrigeration engineering. If you are like most people you sort of glance over this without a second thought. Have you ever stopped to think about what industrial refrigeration is and what it does for you? Most people don’t, but if you stop to think about this you may realize that this is something that you benefit from every single day and it could even be something that you could pursue as a job in the future if you were interested enough.
Industrial refrigeration is the refrigeration of goods in an industry. When you think refrigeration you think of the refrigerator in your kitchen that holds all of the goods that your family consumes. Have you ever stopped to think about the store you shop at? They have what is known as industrial refrigeration, meaning it is large in size and capability. Without this form of refrigeration the store would not be able to stock the goods that you buy and then bring home and put in your kitchen.
Yet, the uses of industrial refrigeration don’t start at the store. Have you stopped to think about how the goods get from the plants to the store? They travel in refrigerated trucks that use the same type of engineering as food products are moved hundreds or even thousands of miles away to the stores that carry them. Again, without refrigeration these goods could not reliably be transferred from the plant to the stores.
Even at the plants large industrial refrigeration systems are used to keep mass quantities of food products on hand all the time. Processed food plants often have hundred of thousands of boxes and bags on hand and they have to be kept cool. It would be difficult for the plants to process enough food to meet the demands of their customers who are the stores that stock food if they did not have this refrigerated storage space.
There are other places that use these refrigeration systems as well, places that you might not even think of when you think of refrigeration. These places are butchers, convenience stores, and even ice skating rinks. Most of these places use ammonia refrigeration and without the systems we would not have all of the food products that we do have and we wouldn’t be able to do some of the things that we love to do such as go to a hockey game or go ice skating in an indoor rink. As you can see, refrigeration engineering is very important to our way of life. As a result, this is a very in demand training and job because these systems often need to be repaired and serviced, so there is plenty of work to go around!
