Safety Glasses For Every Task
Safety glasses are an important part of protection both on the job and around the home. If more people routinely wore these glasses there would be significantly less trips to the emergency room and many more people without damage to their eyes. Glasses that provide protection to the eyes and surrounding tissue need to be comfortable, lightweight and also provide a clear field of vision. In addition there are now tinted glasses that are ideal for indoor and outdoor wear and help prevent eye strain in very bright lighting conditions.
Safety glasses are different in design than standard eyeglasses for a very specific reason. They are constructed to prevent material from entering into the eye area from the sides as well as from the top and bottom. Standard eye glasses do provide protection from material, objects or debris that is coming toward the eye from the front, but they don't protect the other areas of the eye. The special design of safety eyewear is most typically done in a wrap around style that is both lightweight and sleek, keeping the glasses as close to the head as possible without causing any obstruction of vision. This means they can be comfortably worn under any type of safety headgear or caps, perfect for heavy work as well as in labs, medical rooms and in the field.
The lens material in safety glasses is also designed to be both shatter resistant as well as scratch resistant. Typically most lenses will be made of a polycarbonate material which is ultra light weight but also very durable. The scratch resistance is really a bonus to these glasses since they will last significantly longer. The glasses can be placed lens down without causing damage, making these glasses much more practical than a traditional glass type of lens.
The newer materials used in lenses also provide options for both anti-fog glasses as well as chemical resistance. Chemical resistant glasses are typically required for laboratory work or working with a variety of solvents, liquids and materials in a many types of industries. It is important to always check the safety requirements and specifications when working with hazardous chemicals and wear only the appropriate safety eyewear. Anti-fog lenses are also an important consideration for a variety of working conditions. These glasses quickly clear with any additional heat, steam or humidity in the air.
Tinted lens options in safety glasses are perfect for both indoor and outdoor work. Like clear lenses they come in a variety of styles from wrap around to more aviator styles, of course with additional protection to the eyes from the temple area. For both indoor and outdoor use lanyards are a great idea to keep glasses in a safe place when not in use. Tinted lenses are available in different tint colors from lighter to darker tints. Common lens colors include light blue, smoke, mirror blue, amber, silver and gray. There is also an espresso color, which can be a dark tan to dark brown color that provides UV protection as well as meets various OSHA and ANSI standards.
Choosing the correct safety glasses is important in caring for your eyes regardless of the job you are working on. With a wide variety of styles, lens and frame colors as well as types of glasses it is definitely handy to have a few different pairs on hand. For those that already wear glasses special over the glass safety eyewear is available, comfortable sitting over your prescription glasses to provide that all important shield that protects both your eyewear and your eyes.

Which Oakley lens tint do i need?
I picked up a pair of m-frames for some lab work. I would also like to use them as safety goggles for target practice (outdoors). What tint is acceptable to use for lab work inside and target practice outside? My choices are VR28, persimmon and clear. I have no experience with tints and their uses.
VR 28 is a tinted, contrast enhacing lens that is good in medium sunlight. Great for golf. Entirely too dark for indoor use.
Persimmon is an orange lens. It's meant for increasing contrast. Will be too harsh for use as sunglasses. Will be OK for shooting in partly cloudy/sunny days. Unless your lab is REALLY bright, they won't work in the lab. Yellow would work better.
Clear is, well, clear. Good for indoor use as safety lens and good for shooting. since it's clear- not so good for sunglasses. They'll be fine for shooting out doors as well.
long and short of it is, there are no tints that will work in the lab as safety glasses and indoor shooting glasses and outdoor shooting glasses and sunglasses.
I have all three lenses and experience in multiple conditions (including indoor and outdoor ranges).
