Magnetic Pickup

The Foundation of Tone: Guitar Pickups
As guitarists, we're obsessed with tone and finding the right gear to work for the sound we are after, for our band, or for the studio. We've tried a whole lot of guitars, amps, pedals and everything else looking for that "it" thing. We've come across some things that have worked for us, and some that have been a frustrating purchase because the hype didn't match the gear. For every good gear purchase we've made, there's probably a few we've regretted making. Since one can never have enough gear, we are always looking for what can improve our sound and our setup.
The part of the setup that often gets overlooked or ignored is the pickups. We've spent a lot of money on guitars, cables, pedals, and amps, but so often replacing the pickups has not been a part of the equation for seeking better tone. The basic job of a pickup is the translating of the string vibration into a small electric signal that goes through the rest of the setup and then gets amplified. A well made and designed pickup can be crafted to more accurately translate what is being played. Since the pickups job is to capture what you are playing, it is crucial to your tone.
Pickups can be custom designed to capture and translate your tone through a variety of ways: Each magnet type used in a pickup has certain tonal qualities. Pickups can be wound with different wire types and sizes to match vintage specs, or give you a modern sound. Each wire type can also be wound with different tension and number of turns, and the pattern of the wire can effect the tone as well. All of these design factors can be matched with styles of the player and the woods in the guitar to make a truly custom tone translation for the player. All of the sudden your guitar will sound better, and you might end up holding on to some of the rest of your gear line since a more custom and accurate translation is now headed through it!
There's a wide range of great pickup companies out there. Spend some time researching what each offers and learning more about what you are looking for. Chances are the more you know ahead of time, the closer a pickup maker can get you what you are after. Just make sure to warn others of the impending face melting (See: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark).

what makes a good guitar pickup?
i have a basic knowledge of pickups, understand the whole magnetic thing. Why are some pickups different to each other like humbuckers and strat single coils? why are some better than others? can you explain in really deep detail please? thanks
Well, I hope this explains it to the best of your understanding.
Humbuckers - They are two single coil pick ups put together to work as one to be more dynamic and sensitive to the vibration of the strings on your electric guitar. What makes some better than others is how magnetically charged they are. A neck pick up has a low magnet charge because the strings vibrate more freely there so the magnets do not have to listen to precise sound in comparison to the bridge pick up. Different brand pick ups provide a different magnetic charge to them to provide a rang from low sound(least charged) to High sounding (most charged). Some pick ups though ar over charged. by the bridge to be more precise with how much of the frequency of the strings it picks up. Which in turn can provide an over amount of bright, and high end distortion when on over drive or distortion peddles. Now along with the magnets it is set up to provide a high end voltage to keep the pick ups powered also for more clarity and dynamics with your tone and volume knobs. Humbuckers Tend to be a favorite for people who are into hard rock, metal and blues for it's ability to provide a good overdrive or distortion sound.
Single Coil - Single coil pick ups are a favorite amoung pop rock, soft rock, classic rock, jazz and blues because they have an over amount of brightness to them. There is two magnets spaced between the nuts or pegs of the pick ups which are wrapped around abunch of wires and other stuff to pick up the frequency provided by the strings. The difference with a single coil pick up and a humbucker is truely left with just the one pick up. Which can provide it's own distortion but also more sensitive to radio waves around it. When you add a distortion peddle to it or overdrive pedal to it. It sounds a tad bit trashy or noisey like it is on it's last limb staying alive because it is over working it's self. That might sound bad but it really isn't Different single coil pick ups though might sound like a waste do come from different companys to compisate for that defect by using more electronics to equalize and regulate te voltage in the pick up so it does not over drive it's self. With a single coil pick up the same rules of magnetisum apply for the bridge and neck.
Now some guitars also have a center pick up like Fender Strats, Some Teles, Some Gibson SG and Les Paul guitar, etc. The pick up they use for the middle is different with companys who make the guitar and make the pick ups for guitar. Fender Custom makes a middle pick up which is a balance of in between of neck and bridge pick ups. Gibson typically uses another neck pick up for the center pick up, and other copanys use another bridge pick up for the center pick up These each in every company provides a sound for the player which can make or break weather you like the pick up set up or not. Other companys like Scemor Duncun, Dimarzio (spelling might be wrong) tend to manufacture a special pick up just for the center. Most of them though are custom made and ordered in for the guitar for professionals or die hard music lovers.
In my opinion though I pay pretty much any genre of music from classical guitar, to Thrash death metal on my eclectric guitar. I stick with a HSS (humbucker Single coil Single Coil) set up because it provides the correct sounds for both clean and distortion and with proper amp tweaks I can make any sound I want. Other companys like Ibanez set up the pick ups HSH (humbucker Sigle Coil Humbucker) because they feel the middle pick up is played less and does not need a proper set up. Gibson normally does HHH (humbucker Humbucker Humbucker) Fender does SSS (Single Coil Single Coil Single Coil) and the combinations can be endless with what guitar you look at.
