Attraction To Life, The Neodymium Magnet
The modern age is as attracted to magnets as they are to our electronics and favorite tools that we use in our everyday lives. They can be found in many different facets of our lives all the way from industrial fabrication, automotive industry, and especially modern electronics. One might be surprised to see how they have adhered themselves to everyday uses both simple and complex. While some are man made from various chemicals others are created from rare earth elements, also known as rare earth magnets. Different magnets are used for different applications but one of the most widely used types is the neodymium rare earth magnet.
Neodymium rare earth magnets are one of the rare earth magnets and one of the most commonly used variety of it found in the world today. This permanent magnet is an alloy composed primarily of neodymium, iron, and boron bonded together into a crystalline structure. A key property of these is that with time their strength will not fade, as they are one of a type of it is known as "permanent magnets". These are among some of the stronger magnets commonly found in use today, and as such, they are perfectly suited for some of our most common needs. The strength of this particular type of magnet is such that if skin or body parts are caught between two of them, it could potentially lead to bodily harm.
While the neodymium rare earth were developed for the automotive industry, it can now be found in a variety of other products and applications. Chief amongst the uses of this type of magnet is its use in hard disk drives, where the magnet is used as an actuator head for the drive. Cordless tools, speakers, and headphones all the use these same since their type of technology all require a magnet that wont fade in time, a permanent magnet. Simple magnetic fasteners, even toys and jewelry also use these strong magnets. It is the versatility through its strength that makes this magnet so appealing to manufacturers needs. The low cost and relative ease of creating the neodymium rare earth magnet is another feature that drives companies and corporations the world over to use these as opposed to other more costly permanent magnets.
Though the strength of these neodymium rare earth magnets is great, their only major downside is that they are potentially vulnerable to corrosion if left exposed. Fortunately, most are used in an area they could potentially be exposed to weather and other elements are usually given a plating or covering, typically composed of nickel or copper. As a whole, this one downside is relatively small and the major benefits of these versatile magnets are practically undeniable.

Someone tell me about head/earphones with neodymium magnets?
I'm not audio savvy and probably won't be anytime soon. I've been interested in getting these certain earphones and they have neodymium magnets, apparently they provide a better sound quality? I don't know how magnets work in earphones but I know neodymium magnets are pretty strong, I'll be using these earphones with a lot of things, including my netbook. What I want to know is, will these headphones affect my computer? I've always been told to never put magnets near a computer.
well... in theory, quality headphones [no matter what type of magnet] - should be safe around the computer... as long as you are not putting the earphones inside the computer case!
Here's a good test.
Take those headphones and place it close to a quarter [magnets are attracted to quarters], and see if they attract, and how strong the attraction is.
I'd bet you that they won't attract much - cuz quality earphones will have some magnetic sheilding. This is the same sheilding that prevents Electronic/Radio Freq. Interference to them from things like your celphone or microwaves etc.
