You won't find a handier tool than the power miter saw.You can't beat the precision and totally accurate 90 degree cuts.That is the most common cut next to the 45 degree cut..the base of the miter saw swivels to make any degree cut that is possible.Add to that the fact that some miter saws also tilt as well as swivel making it possible for compound angle cuts.
The fact that the miter saw is a precision cutting machine it is actually indispensable.The blade is actually set in a sturdy arm attached to a heavy body which allows you to precision cut right on the line.You can shave minute increments until you have a perfect fit.That is provided you didn't cut it to short the first time.Because of the stability and the built in safety guards the miter saw is actually on e of the safest saw to operate.
Of course you will find things that the miter saw can't do.One thing is ripping lumber to width,another is the fact that it is limited to the width of the lumber that it can cut.If you have ia miter saw with a sliding arm it will increase the width that you can cut.The head on a miter saw tilts both ways allowing you to make right or left hand cuts.As with any tool the bells and whistles you have on the machine,the more it will cost.
There are pros and cons with having a miter saw just like any tool you might own.Your basis saw will make crosscuts and miters but it doesn't tilt for bevel cuts.It is good basic jobsite saw that is inexpensive relatively light weight and easy to set up.Also the width and depth is limited to how far the blade can reach.
Your compound miter saw is a step up from the basic model.Besides the crosscuts and miters it will also tilt both ways to compound angle cuts.Your width and depth cuts are still limited to the reach of the blade.
Then you have your sliding compound miter saw.You can do your crosscuts,miters,bevels but it only tilts one way but it slides. The sliding mechanism increase the cutting capacity.The one way tilt means you have to make some of your cuts with the work piece upside down.
Another step up is the from all the miter saws above is the double bevel sliding compound miter saw.With it you can do your crosscuts,miters,bevels to both sides and slides.You can do all the cuts above plus you won't need to make any upside down cuts.You have make a lot of precision adjustments in order to get it right.
For real convenience there is the cordless sliding compound miter saw.You can do the crosscut,miter cuts & bevel cuts all with out electricity.The largest battery they have at this time is a 24 volt.That battery might not be big enough for cutting all day on the job site without recharging. You can work on job sites without electricity but you will need to carry an extra battery.

Why aren't miter saws to made to be able to make a miter cut of more than 50 degrees?
Most saws have 45 or 50 degree maximum & it sucks
I'd only shop for one at Home Depot & I've never found one there that cuts more than 50 degrees.
most cut at 90 degrees ..remember 45 plus 45 is 90
