Can you please describe the safe ways to sand a piece of timber using a disc sander?

A disc sander can leave cross grain scratches that are very difficult to remove. I'd never use one. Use a belt sander and always sand with the grain. Depending on how much material you have to remove, start with 50-80 grit, then twice that, then twice that.

Practice on something not critical that you don't care if you ruin.
