Pilot Communication Systems
An important part of pilot communication systems is the aviation headset. Without a good headset the pilot’s safety will be compromised. In fact, the safety of all on board will be jeopardised if the pilot cannot send and receive properly with his pilot headset. It is not too much to expect top quality when safety is involved, so that is the first thing a pilot should look for when purchasing an aviation headset.
Manufacturers of aviation headsets often use poor quality materials in an attempt to keep the headsets light in weight. While lightness is to be desired, if the materials are of poor quality they will degrade and break up quickly. They are likely to be uncomfortable and worse still, safety may be compromised if the clarity of hearing is impaired.
Cheaper pilot headsets often have poor adjustment ability, making the headset uncomfortable to wear. Discomfort is likely to take the pilot’s attention and focus away from the job in hand, thus placing himself and his passengers at risk. Other problems are poor quality adhesives that become sticky in hot weather and no noise reduction feature.
By buying a top quality aviation headset such as Bose or David Clark, the pilot can be assured that communication will not be compromised. And he will be more likely to get customer service if something happens to go wrong with it.
But you also need to be sure that your pilot headset will be compatible with the aviation intercom that is in the plane you are going to fly. If you are purchasing the aviation intercom it may be best to buy the headset that goes with it. Aviation intercoms can be either panel mounted or portable.
Look for the many features that pilots prefer, such as a choice of stereo or mono sound; voice activated intercom with adjustable volume controls; a pilot isolate feature, and battery back-up. Where is the pilot light on my OLD recessed vented gas heater?
I have a Gaffers & Sattler Mission recessed vented heater. If you open the bottom panel there are instructions on how to light or relight the pilot, but I can't find the little pipe the gas will come from in order to light it. It seems a little haphazard to just wave a match around down there, so I'm wondering if anyone knows where it is. I'm freezing here.
I don't know, but can you Google your model number and maybe 'pilot lighting instructions', even search youtube? If you want to email me a picture or so of the unit, inside where it should be, maybe I can help you find it..
