How do those blood pressure pump things work?
The things where they wrap it around your arm and they pump it up, how do those work? How does it show you the blood pressure? I just don't get how they know when to stop pumping, If your arm is fatter it will stop sooner right? So how does it work with the blood pressure? It's confusing..
When the pneumatic sleeve is placed around your arm, it is connected to a machine - sphygmomanometer or blood pressure meter - with a glass tube containing mercury, and a bulb with a screw which, when tightened, prevents air being released from the sleeve. Then a stethoscope is placed over the brachial vein on the inside of your elbow. The sleeve is pumped up to around 170. The screw is then tightened to prevent air being released from the sleeve. The screw is gently unscrewed to allow the air to slowly escape from the sleeve. There will come a time when the "thumping" of the heart can be heard through the stethoscope, this is called the Systolic pressure,and is the peak blood pressure when the heart is beating or squeezing out blood. The pressure is continued to be released until the "thumping" ceases to be heard, this point is called the diastolic pressure and this is when your heart is filling with blood or resting between beats. The size of the arm is not important, it is only necessary to affect the brachial vein carrying blood.
