4 Basic Types of Drills Used in Different Kinds of Drilling Work

Know and familiarize yourself with the different types of drills so you can properly use each one.

Hand tool drills, corded drills, hammer drills, cordless drills, and the drill press are the basic types of drills used in many different drilling works.

Many types of drills are specifically used for a certain drilling work. Most of the time we tend to use an inappropriate type of drill due to the large variation of drills on the market. Read on to understand the different types of drilling equipment and how each drill is specifically used.

Hand tool drills

Hand tool drills include the different types of drilling tools powered manually. These drills are the most basic type of drilling tools that have been used for a very long time. The most common example of a hand-held drill is an egg beater. Hand tool drills include bow drill, brace tool, gimlet, push drill, and a Chuck. These basic drilling tools are primitively used in drilling holes on wood and creating fire.

Corded drills

Corded drills are also commonly known as pistol-grip drills because of their standard pistol-grip handle. These types of drills are very commonly used today. They are also the most versatile type of drills which can be used with many attachments and that will work for many applications.

Hammer drill

The hammer drill has the similar drilling function as an electric drill. However, it can also provide hammering action when drilling concrete or masonry work. The hammer mechanism in a hsmmer drill can rotate to perform drilling tasks on concrete. Hammer drills include the cam-type hammer drills and rotary hammer drills or masonry drills. A rotary hammer drill has a more complicated drilling mechanism for a more substantial drilling function. Rotary drill mechanisms can either exclusively do drilling or hammering work or both. This is more commonly used in drilling and breaking large bricked concrete.

Cordless drills

Cordless drills have the similar functions of other types of drills except that they are powered by rechargeable batteries. These drills have the most variety of functions. However, due to a limited energy supply provided by a battery, spare batteries are always recommended during drilling work to continuously drill.

Drill press

A drill press is also called a bench drill because it is a type of drill that is mounted on a workbench. Its mechanism includes the pillar, spindle, table, drill head, and the base. A drill press is motor powered and does not consume much effort compared to other manual drill types. This is a fixed drill that can accurately drill holes on an equal distance. This is because the material that requires drilling can securely be fixed on the table. A drill press can also work with various attachments for polishing or honing. The appropriate attachment can also turn the drill into a sander machine.

Many modern drilling technologies are currently available in the market and can complete just about any type of drilling job.

What exactly is a rotary club?

I have an opportunity to volunteer for a rotary book sale event taking place(I'm a senior in highschool) and was wondering what exactly is a rotary club? My father mentioned something about secret society and free masonry but I don't really understand what these are and why they have a negative annotation. So should I volunteer or not?

Rotary Club International is a service club made up of individuals who volunteer their time and contribute to charities. Sort of like Freemasonry, with the distinction that Freemasonry is a fraternity, not a club.
