The Royal Sovereign RSS-685 Roll Laminator: A Review
One of the best things about roll laminators is that they can process items that are extremely wide. One such device is the Royal Sovereign RSS-685. This machine has a terrific laminating width as well as other features that make it stand out. Here are this product's strengths – and a couple of its weaknesses.
Strengths:
- This machine has a laminating width of 27 inches, so it's perfect for creating graphic displays, posters, signs, and other wide-format items.
- The RSS-685 is a device that can work quickly. In fact, it's twice as fast as some of the other roll laminators on the market due to its being a heat shoe-type device. This machine can laminate an item that's 19.7 feet long in a minute, so you can imagine how little time it will take to do your work. There are 9 different speed settings you can choose from depending on what you're laminating.
- You'll need to use rolls of laminating film with this machine instead of pouches. You can use film that's between 1 and 10 mil thick so you items can have the amount of protection they need. Both thermal and pressure-sensitive film can be used.
- The temperature of the RSS-685 is controlled digitally and the highest temperature it can operate at is 320 degrees Fahrenheit, which is equivalent to 160 degrees on the Celsius scale. It has a cold setting so you can take care of any thermally sensitive items you want using pressure-sensitive film.
- If you want to use this machine for mounting purposes, it's totally possible. The device can process boards that are up 0.5" thick. This feature will come in handy if you want to create visual aids and so forth.
- The RSS-685 has a blower built into it so it can cool off properly before shutting off. The blower helps keep the machine in good condition and it will enable you to keep laminating.
- Using this laminator is pretty easy because it has a digital keypad and a foot pedal. The keypad has an LED display that's easy to read and all of the buttons are clearly marked. As for the foot pedal, it's a great addition because using it will allow you to keep your hands free, thus making the whole process a lot easier. This machine also comes with a remote control for added convenience.
- The RSS685 comes with a cross-cutter and side slitters so you can trim the excess film from your documents.
Weaknesses:
- The RSS-685 takes a bit of time to warm up. It will be ready for use after about 10 minutes, so you may want to do other things while it's warming up.
- Since this is a wide-format device, it's going to take up a lot of room. With dimensions of 42.1" (width) x 25.6" (depth) x 47.4" (height), it's probably not a good choice if you have a really tiny workspace. It also weighs a lot (220 pounds), but luckily there are casters on the bottom of the stand so moving it won't be super difficult.
As you can see, the Royal Sovereign RSS-685 has a lot to offer, from its wide laminating width to its fast operation. Although it's large and takes a while to warm up, this machine would be a good choice if you need a wide-format roll laminator.

I've been on Sovereign 3 times. It's one of the oldest RC ships (if not the oldest) but it's still in good shape for its age. They did an overhaul on it a few years ago and made updates where they were needed. It's been a few years since I was on this ship so, I can't remember alot of the details! Go to cruise-addicts.com for tons of reviews on this ship. It is one of my favorite ships, maybe for sentimental reasons (it was my first cruise!) but I think you'll have a good time!! Have fun!
