Palm Vitamin E Tocotrienols Have a Positive Beneficial Neuroprotective Effects
Clinical Study of Neuroprotective Effects of Palm Vitamin E Tocotrienols
There are various ongoing clinical studies which involves tocotrienols. One of the most extensively investigated area is the neuroprotective effects of tocotrienols. Several studies conducted by Sen and co-workers in isolated human neuronal cells using nanomolar concentration of tocotrienol, but not tocopherol, demonstrated potent inhibition of cell signalling pathway which causes neuronal damages and the ability to reverse the condition. Similar conclusions were confirmed during subsequent work in animals, where gene knocked-out mice were employed to assess the efficacy of tocotrienols in preventing stroke and in reversing the effects in post-stroke condition. As a consequence of these studies the necessity of human trials arose.
The research firstly focussed on identifying an appropriate human model that could be used as stroke-predictive factor. This model found in the brain white matter lesion (WML), that is a neuronal damage in the brain while matter and is causally related to stroke. WML represents a microvascular ischemic changes in the brain (the smaller caliber blood vessels in the brain showing signs of ischemia or decreased blood flow indicating the presence of a fragile cerebral vascular network). Hence these white matter abnormalities on MRI are more commonly seen in patients who have microvascular and macrovascular risk factors such as a history of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol (dyslipidemia / bad lipid profile). Most of the time, patients who get stroke are unaware of the symptoms or remain asymptomatic, in view of this it creates great interest for us to look into the treatment and prevention of stroke.
Conduct of Tocotrienols Study
It is a double blind placebo controlled clinical trial. Healthy volunteers above 35 years are eligible to participate. They will undergo screening for the inclusion and exclusion criteria to be considered in the study. If they are qualified and interested to participate, they will sign the information sheet and informed consent form.
Number of volunteers for recruitment is 400 inclusive of 120 for MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). After the imaging of baseline MRI, the volunteers will be divided into the Non MRI and MRI group pending on the outcome of the MRI images. The Non MRI group will be followed up for one year and the MRI candidates for two years. Each of the volunteers will be assigned either in the treatment group or placebo after randomization. Volunteers in the treatment group will receive 400mg of tocotrienol supplementation daily and the rest will receive an identical looking placebo. Volunteers will be followed up every 3 months basis for one year in the Non MRI group and at the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, and 24th month for the MRI group. MRI will be repeated at the end of 12 months and 24 months for the volunteers in the MRI group.
Anticipated Study Outcome of Tocotrienols
Researchers hope to be able to have conclusive evidence to show that the tocotrienols from palm oil have a positive beneficial neuro and vascular protective effects / activities towards the completion of the study in year 2011.

How can I save my potted palm?
My cats are destroying my potted palm. It was a large potted palm about 3 ft. high. I have it in a pot that has a 10 inch base and wider sides at the top. It does have a drainage hole. The cats have got it down to 3 frons and 3 new shoots. I have taken steps to keep the cats away from it but its really looking terrible. I put sheets of lint roller tape in the pot to keep the cats out and spray them with a plant sprayer.
Hi there! Is it only the cats that is giveing your plant a hard time? Is your plant getting enough sunlight/too much sunlight? Potted Palms enjoy as much light as you can give them. I sure hope the kittys havn't been makeing potty in the pot, or that will for sure be the end of it. Acidic and all that.
Keep the soil moist, but not wet. They are also heavy "feeders", meaning they do enjoy a liquid lunch now and then, yes, even in the winter. Keep them warm, no drafts, at least 72*. Trim off any sick or broken branches. Even if it does make it look smaller. When you do water, you should use warm water, remember, do not over water. Moist, but NOT wet. Now, if you REALLY want to go over board, give it a name, like, Hmmm, Fronzzy, and talk to it now and then. Try also putting a few toys or whatever to help keep your cats out. My cat , thank goodness, doesn't like plants. Good luck with "Fronzzy". May the plant gods be with you.
Bertram.
