Undermount Bathroom Sink — An Elegantly Simple Installation
The unpretentious but stylishly functional undermount sink has long been appreciated because it offers a smooth expanse of counter surface and a simplified installation. The elegance of this bath basin style makes this sink mounting choice a classic and enduring solution for a range of contemporary as well as traditional designs.
Undermount bathroom sinks are attached to the reverse side of the counter surface so only the inside of the sink bowl or basin is visible to the user. This is a very effective way to contrast a brightly colored bathroom sink with a wide range of counter top materials. The visually highlighted counter surface accents the choice of counter material and draws attention to this prominently featured design element.
The undermount bathroom sink should first be on hand to accurately size the counter cut-out. Your counter top space is then carefully measured and the dimensions noted to correctly arrange the sink drain, fixture mounting holes and sink cut-out positions. The un-mounted sink is then positioned upside down in the chosen counter top position on top of your counter surface. Your reversed sink rim is used as a guide to trace around and mark a reference line for the counter top cut-out. The temporarily positioned sink is then removed from the counter surface and the marked cut-out reduced in size so the counter top opening will be slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the under mounted basin. Cutting a reduced size counter hole creates a slight counter top overhang which casts a subtle shadow to visually enhance the counter and bowl combination and conceal the water tight joint between the bottom of the counter and bowl rim.
After cutting the reduced diameter counter top opening—the sink basin is temporarily placed into position beneath the counter top and the under side of the counter is marked to indicate the areas which will receive the water proof seal of silicone adhesive which will bond the sink rim beneath the counter. The temporarily positioned sink is then removed so adhesive can be applied to the marked under counter areas. The sink can then be aligned and temporarily blocked in place as the adhesive cures to complete the installation.
Conservative installers also use mechanical fasteners as well as the silicone adhesive to redundantly insure the undermount sink is securely fastened to the under side of the counter surface. Online instruction which visually detail under counter and sink drain mounting can be studied and reviewed to compliment written descriptions of the process so the range of fixture and hardware options is fully understood.
Many installations create extended length counters which allow the mounting of a matched pair of under counter sinks—positioned side by side for simultaneous use by two family members. Use of this open and spacious design option is a practical and efficient way to make your bath functional for more than one user.
An undermount bathroom sink will provide a life time of satisfactory service if appropriate steps are taken to securely fasten and seal the under mounted bath fixture. Which is better under mount or drop in sink?
We are having granite countertops installed and I would like opinions on which is better AND why.
I have heard some complaints that with under mount sinks-bacteria can grow between the two.
Murray H- I did ask the "expert" but sometimes they only say want they think you want to hear to make a sale- So I put the question to "real" people who use the products. But thank you for the input- you made a good point about the ease of wiping it down.
We just renovated 3 bathrooms with granite: one with a hand-painted undermount sink and the other two with overmounts. They all are beautiful, but I prefer the undermount and now wish I had undermounted the other two. The only reason being is that the adhesive between the sink and the granite gets discolored and is noticeable in one (granite is black galaxy, adhesive is white so I can't bleach the adhesive) and it bothers me.
As far as bacteria is concerned, I wouldn't worry too much about that since there are so many anti-bacterial cleaners these days. I dry the undermount sink after use, mainly because it's hand painted and I want it to shine, lol:) Undermounts are very chic these days and I like the faucets mounted in the deck, too.
