The Proper Smoke Detector Locations For Homeowners
One of the worst things that you can do when placing smoke detectors in your house is to put them in entirely unreachable areas. In this article we're going to cover the best locations to place smoke detectors throughout your house so that you can have maximum protection against fire.
Sometimes the builder of your house would have placed the detectors in hard to reach places, like at the top of a 16 foot high ceiling. It's all very well if you are young and agile, but difficult to reach if you are elderly or an expectant mum.
Don't place your detectors near heating ducts, near your stove, nor next to bright lights. These devices can produce enough heat to set off your smoke detector and raise a false alarm. Anyone who has heard that chirpping noise that smoke detectors make when low on power knows just how annoying it can be. If you place your smoke detectors in the proper locations you won't lose battery power, and your smoke detectors will be ready to go if you really do need them.
You should always place a smoke detector in your kitchen, but not directly over the stove itself. If you're cooking something that produces a lot of smoke, you should ventilate your kitchen as much as possible to avoid false alarms. Many people remove the batteries from their kitchen smoke detector. Please do not do this just to save yourself a false alarm, fires do start in kitchens. Oftentimes people forget that the batteries aren't in the detector, and when they need them they do not sound. As long as you don't place your smoke detectors near common heat sources or too high you should have maximum protection against fire.
Finally, don't place your detectors low either. Smoke rises to the ceiling and a detector placed too low most likely won't sound unless the fire gets really big. Keep your smoke detectors mounted high so they can detect the rising smoke in time to alert you before things get out of hand. Test them regularly and remember to change the batteries at least once a year and the devices every 5 years for your protection.

Why do all of my smoke detectors go off at the same time, no smoke in the house.?
I have a newer house (4 yrs old). Periodically, all my smoke detectors in the house go off for a few seconds, then stop, then start again, it'll be fine for a few hours, then same thing. I don't think they're carbon monoxide detectors too, but there is absolutely no smoke in the house. Any ideas?
We've checked all through the house, no smoke. Normally the smoke detectors beep when the battery is low, and I change it. Could it be one has been beeping somewhere that I don't normally go and can't hear it beep, the battery has died, and now this is the result?
It sound like you may have one bad unit. All the units are interconnected and with battery backup. You need to find out which one is defective.
It takes time but remove each unit from the system (one at a time) and wait long enough to see which one it is.
1- Turn off the power to the system at the panel breaker.
2- Start at the first unit and disconnect the red wire only, being sure to leave the other wires connected.
3- The results will tell you which one is bad by doing this one unit at a time and then reconnecting it back into the circuit before going on to the next unit. The batteries will keep the system operational without the regular power being on.
4- Before doing this try using a compressed air source to blow out the dust that may be your problem.
(A high powered vacuum cleaner may work too)
