You have a JVC everio HDD cam and it forces you to work with these proprietary .MOD files, which limits you to bring into media players or video editing suites for playback or edit.
MOD is basically a MPEG-2 formatted file recorded by some digital camcorders, such as JVC Everio, the Canon FS100 and the Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders. The MOD files also don't work perfectly with most portable devices like iPod, iPhone, PSP, Zune, Creative Zen, Sansa, Xperia, Archos, cell phone, etc.

i have a mac with leopard and a panasonicd snap sv av50?
i do not have a book will this work with mac and what setting do i go to
The Operating System does not matter - what matters is what you want to do with it and the applications to do stuff.
But first, get the manual:

Since this multifunction device can take stills and video and save both to the same SD memory card, it is STRONGLY suggested that you use a card reader connected to your Mac's USB port to transfer files. Chances are good that when you connect the AV50 directly to your Mac, iPhoto will launch - which is fine if you want to deal only with stills, but not fine if you want to deal with any video or audio on the memory card.
If you use a card reader, iPhoto will not launch and the memory card will mount as a regular external drive and you can easily copy the different files to your Mac's hard drive.
The video it captures is in MP4 format. The current QuickTime player should have no issues with playing this file type. iMovieHD (back to probably version 5 - maybe even earlier) should also have no problems with it. Just Launch iMovie and drag the MP4 video file to the clips pane or the timeline. It will decompress the video and put it in a format iMovie can work with.
The stills it captures are JPEG. iPhoto will have no problems with this.
The audio it can playback includes MP3. iTunes, GarageBand and Audacity (not included with your Mac, but a good audio tool to have) can easily provide MP3 files.
You do not need any of the software included on the CD that came in the box with the AV50 when it was new. That is all for Windows based computers.
