Dallas Day 2: Vegan Diner, Sculptures, Asian Art

Day 2 of Benjy Portnoy's (SavorMyLife.com) trip to Dallas. Includes vegan restaurant Spiral Diner, Nasher Sculpture Center, & Crow Collection of Asian Art.

Sunday morning we changed hotels to a home base in downtown Dallas, putting us closer to the attractions. We started with lunch at Spiral Diner, a hipster vegan joint that seems like more of a south Austin kind of place than Dallas (and a satellite Fort Worth location). Kat ordered a spicy barbecued pineapple and tempeh sandwich, while I went for a green salad and veggie burger. Good stuff…exceptional as far as mainstream vegan food goes. We also split an order of nachos with cashew cheez...which was surprisingly cheese-like.

We wound up the afternoon at Nasher Sculpture Center, a small but engaging indoor/outdoor place full of tasteful and varied pieces of art. They were featuring some absolutely incredible mobile pieces by Alexander Calder. They looked like he’d spent hours working on form and balancing one side to the next. Somebody got an A in physics.

Moving through the gardens outside, I found the panoramic feature on my phone and we made our own art.

Across the street was the Asian Art Museum. I was absolutely entranced by the ornate details of everything. There were pieces that looked like someone had spent 100 hours crafting them, but were no larger than a pill bottle. Gorgeous.

Despite some serious fatigue brought on by my lack of sleep over the last few days, we stopped at Uptown Pub for a Hoegaarden and Blue Moon. Maybe the Hoegaarden was flat, but it tasted like it was bordering on beer lemonade.

We grabbed a pizza and headed back for the second half of National Treasure on cable. Maybe Nicholas Cage can find a secret presidential book that could teach him how to act.
