Air Conditioner Terminology

Air conditioning equipment Terminology

If a person starts considering buying an air conditioner they' ll hear a great deal of terms them to hardly understand. Understanding this terminology causes it to be easier with an person with average skills to buy an air conditioner.

Fortunately it may not be very difficult to understand a large number of terms. A simple glossary can help the average joe view the realm of air conditioning units.

Air conditioner terminology:

Condenser: Here is the device that creates the air conditioner work. It can be basically a pump that puts pressure on the refrigerant gas inside the air conditioner. Pressuring the gas 's what changes the temperature and helps to create the cooling effect. The condenser moves the refrigerant around.

Blower: This can be the fan in the air conditioner that moves the environment around. By blowing air above the coils it cools the environment. It can be used being a fan for cooling air and ventilate a location.

Window Mounted Unit: This refers to an air conditioner that is mounted on a window. This is actually the traditional air conditioner the majority of people visualize. These air conditioning equipment can work by getting heat and pushing out cool air. These units are created to put in older homes and buildings that don't have central air conditioning systems.

Ductless Air conditioner: This describes an air conditioner that is attached to a wall but seriously isn't coupled to the outside. It cools air inside a room without bringing air in from the outside. Many of these units may be mounted in the baseboard or the ceiling.

Wall Mounted Unit: A window mounted unit mounted inside a hole cut inside the wall as opposed to a window.

Portable air conditioner: A compact air conditioner that sits on to the ground or perhaps a table. It is usually moved around with ease hence the term portable. These units require no installation.

Swamp Cooler: Another reputable name an evaporative cooler.

Evaporative Cooler: A device that cools the oxygen within a residence by pumping cool moisture in to the air. It is usually known as a swamp cooler.

Heat Pump: A tool that cools or warms a home by pumping heat into or from the jawhorse. It really works such as an air conditioner nonetheless it also can heat your house.

Air conditioning System: A system that pumps cooled air throughout a whole home.

Central Air conditioner: Another term for an air conditioning system.

Refrigerant: The liquid or gas that cools off an air conditioner. Additionally it is called coolant.

Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC): An expression describing the technicians and businesses that service heating and air conditioning systems.

HVAC: An acronym for HVAC.

British Thermal Unit (BTU): The unit employed to look at the quantity of heat or generated by an air conditioner.

Energy Star: US governmental certification for energy efficiency in appliances. An Air conditioner using this type of are often more high efficiency.

Thermostat: Device that controls the temperature associated with an air conditioner. Traditionally it had been attached to the machine these days it is sometimes a remote control.

Dorms and cooling question, Evaporative (swamp) or air conditioner?

My final question regarding evaporative coolers and air conditioners. This one's a doozy.

So I'm deciding whether to choose an evaporative cooler or air conditioner for a dorm room (11x12 sqr ft) located in Long Beach. However, Long Beach's humidity is about 15% on most days excluding the night where the marine layer moves in.

I'm looking for the cheaper alternative but I don't want to be screwed (because I'm buying on craigslist).

So what are your opinions! I need as much help as possible regarding this because I could either loose or save money.
The Location:
Long Beach, CA.

OMG! I'm such a spaz! Bare with me!!
I used your question and the answer I gave to partially answer this question from Yahoo! Answer Asker Chewbaca Luna, Dozer: Is a window ac more efficient than a poratble swamp cooler?

I answered with this:

To claim something to be more energy efficient than another, that thing would have to do its purpose as well or better using less energy.

Reticon (a Yahoo! Answers Asker) asked a question :D ifference between a humidifier and a evaporative/swamp cooler? I answered him with this:

We refer to window units as swamp coolers here in Louisiana. Real swamp coolers actually wouldn't cool us off down here; as an evaporative cooler the true swamp cooler wouldn't be able to cool the water in our air in addition to the water on the pads (inside of the machine). True swamp coolers use the process of evaporation to cool air. Like when you fan yourself, you are passing moving air by moisture, the act of that moisture evaporating is what makes you feel cooler. Essentially the act of the water evaporating off the pads is what makes the air cool. A humidifer (Lord help if anyone owns one down here) makes dry and uncomfortable air a little more, well, humid.

With that being said, even though you didn't ask about humidifiers you can see that a swamp cooler works best in dryer climates. A window AC uses a lot more energy because it doesn't simply cool the air by process of evaporation, it cools it off by compressing the refigerant (usually freon or some other flourocarbon). By doing this the freon becomes a hot high pressure gas. Once its turned to gas it goes through multiple coils. As its going through the coils the heat is evenly dispersed and the freon goes from gas to liquid. Once becoming a liquid it goes through and expansion valve, the liquid evaporates and turns into a cool gas with low pressure. Now as a cool low-pressure gas it goes through a second series of coils while absorbing heat and cooling air. Window units have to sets of fans, one to blow the hot air outside and the cool air inside.

So obviously with more processes comes more use of energy to complete the process.

I vote swamp cooler.

END ANSWER TO CHEWBACA LORNE, DOZER

Ok so lets make conclusions: #1 No humidifier needed in Long Beach. #2 Swamp coolers work in humid enviroments up to %20 (relative humidity). #3 ACs take lots of energy to produce results.

Again, I vote swamp cooler, a used when shouldn't run ya into the poor house, and conserving energy will give your wallet and the earth a big ol' hug!
