What are the best vans with regard to MPG?
Fuel efficiency is becoming more important for motorists all the time, and is increasingly one of the major factors that drivers look for when buying their new vehicles. Fuel efficiency can be especially important if your job involves a large amount of driving, making it even more important for owners of vans and other goods vehicles.
Vans are a great choice for economy, being able to hold more passengers and cargo than most other types of vehicles, but if you don't find a vehicle with good mileage you could end up paying dearly. It should be no surprise that vans tend to consume a lot more fuel than smaller cars, or even SUVs, but it's still possible to find fuel-efficient vehicles in this category that combine extensive interior space with reasonable mileage.
If you're a lover of classic van designs, it's unlikely you'll find a fuel efficient vehicle second-hand, as it's the newer models on the market that are designed especially with this consideration in mind. If you're able to spend a little more on a new van fresh from the production line or the showroom, this initial cost could be made up for over time in fuel savings.
Looking to the big-name American manufacturers can be a wise move when looking for good MPG vans, with the 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan offering 17 miles per gallon for city driving and 24 mpg out on the motorway, for a 3.3 litre V6 engine. Even the larger 3.8 litre engine of the Hero and SXT models still offers an impressive 16 mpg in the city, putting it ahead of the competition. Chrysler isn't far behind though, with its Town & Country LX, Touring and Touring Plus van models similarly offering 16 mpg in cities and 23 mpg at higher speeds, with room for up to seven passengers.
Japanese manufacturers don't let the side down either, with the 2011 Honda Odyssey and 2011 Toyota Sienna being top draws for fuel efficient vans this year. The Honda Odyssey delivers 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on motorways, with a list of extra features aimed at creating the most luxurious driving experience possible - including DVD players and advanced navigation systems.
If you don't need these extra features but still favour fuel efficiency, the Toyota Sienna comes in two trim levels that both offer 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the motorway, while covering your vehicles with cheap van insurance could also help keep the costs down if you need repairs.
