How Exactly Does this Old Hilti Fastener Work?

I'll post another pic or two of it opened. It's an old, heavy (4 1/2 lbs) Hilti Rapid Fastening System - DX Tool.
NOT electric, Hand tool. It does have a small cylindric tube running through both parts, but definitely not for a staple. Maybe a small nail could fit.
I might assume you slam the bottom halfl of the detached part into the top side, and a positioned nail then penetrates the wood? Wow, sounds bizarre.
Anyone know how this works and what it was used for?
This model is a DX 100-L. It uses a .25 caliber blank load. When you twist the tool apart the blank goes in the plunger. Re-assemble tool, insert nail, place where nail is wanted and swat with a 2 pound hammer. The blank drives the nail. The blank loads come in different power levels (which are color coded) for use with different materials.
i.e. brick, block, concrete or steel.
