Welding Flux – The Information Article

Welding flux is also known as Flux core welding, it's a semi automatic welding process which uses a tubular electrode that creates flux with constant voltage. Welding core flux is one of the high end demands nowadays due to its increased used in construction segment. Its portability and quick use in construction has made it a favorite choice among people.

Flux core welding is divided in two types. Its one type uses shielding gas while another does not. The shielding gas is not required with the first type cause the flux used in it has already a characteristics to resolve a contamination issue, thus, it acts as its own shield. This is the reason, most of the welder opts for first type of welding flux in constructional use.

Type One Welding Flux - Type one welding flux can be used on most of the steel sheets which makes welding flux an enhanced choice among users. Nonetheless, there are many disadvantages of welding flux. Some of them are:

If the welder is not frequent with using type one welding flux on base metal sheets, it can result in a melted contact tip. Another major issue is if the machine is not feeding the wire properly, irregular on the wire can be resulted. Sometimes, improper use of welding flux can also lead to a condition known as porosity is the gases are not releasing properly before the metal. This may lead for the holes to be made inside the metal that is been welded.

Second Type Welding Flux - Second type of flux is used as an outside support due to its shielding gas. It's normally used to adjoin different steels together. This type of welding process is the most effective in welding thick sheets of metal however while using this, you need to be aware of outside air conditions, as too much of wind can create slag.

What type of welding is this?

I'm trying to do some research on welding, and I'm having trouble specifying the type of welding that I have seen. As best I can describe it, this welding method uses arc welding, with no external electrode (meaning that it is permanent, ruling out SMAW), and no filler rod. I can't tell if there is a gas used in the process, but it doesn't appear to be purely gas-powered. Also, it creates a lot of slag (not sure if this is with all types, but it does create a lot more than what would seem normal).

I know that I might not have the best understanding, or description, but could anyone please help me try to find out what type of welding this is?
They were welding together two 1/2 inch steel rods, perpendicular, one over the other, in the middle of the rods.
And it was operated by 1 person.

So where did you see it? What industry? What were they joining together? Why not go back to were you seen it being done and ask the welder or the others working the job site what was the process?
