Composition, Application and Treatment of Steel
Steel production is one of the biggest industries in the world, proven by more than a billion tons of steel processed every year. This mass production is caused by the broad use of steel in the construction and manufacturing industries. With standard strength and durability, steel is among major structural components for roads, bridges, stadiums and sky scrapers as well as important appliances and automotive parts. Steel is also found with significant use in making medical tools and equipment.
Steel is mostly composed of iron and a small percentage of carbon. Although with a very small quantity required, carbon is as equally important in the performance of steel as iron. Actually, the carbon content of steel determines its desirable qualities such as hardness, ductility and tensile strength. Hardness pertains to the dense bond between the alloying materials, while ductility and tensile strength pertain to the ability of steel to keep from breaking when exposed to different kinds of stress.
Even though carbon-steel combination, using the right content proportion, produces relatively strong steel, fusing other metals to further its desirable properties can be done. Nickel and Manganese, for example can be alloyed to improve the steel's tensile strength, while chromium and vanadium can increase its hardness and resistance to metal fatigue.
The hardness of steel has a very little effect on its ductility or malleability, making it a strong material for perforated products. Alloyed with high corrosion resistance metals, perforated stainless steel can be produced. The products are good for wide range of applications including cladding and screening. The vast application of steel is a result of its maneuverable properties.
Steel's property as well as its composition can be changed for better results by a variety of heat treating processes. One of the processes is annealing which mainly focus on softening the steel to become combinable with other metals or for degeneration or regeneration or carbon. Proper implementation of such process can lead to production of high performance perforated stainless steel.
However, mismanagement of the entire process may result in a brittle output. Although brittleness is not a desirable property for steel, it is very effective in forming stainless steel extrusions. Extrusion is the process of forming simple and complicated cross-sections. Most steel extrusions are used for architectural purposes.
