Mineral Wool Cavity Wall Insulation – Curbs Carbon Footprint of Your House
Mineral wool cavity wall insulation is made from granulated rock wool or spun glass materials. This insulation product is made by treating with a water repellent and/or binder. Due to strict quality controlling manufacturing process, it has been accredited by the British Board of Agreement Certificate and receives approval of Government’s scheme of insulation grants. Once installed in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions, this material is potent to provide stable and solid insulation for the life of the building. The properties of this blown mineral wool insulation are the reasons behind durable performance and they include –
- Thermal conductivity – The thermal conductivity or U-value of the mineral wool cavity wall insulation material is very low and that’s why it is ideal as a home insulator.
- Density – The density of blown insulation ranges from 18kg/m3 for glass wool materials to 40kg/m3 for rock wools.
- Water penetration – Mineral wool insulation material is resistant to water penetration and does not allow transmitting water across the cavity walls or through capillary action.
- Non-combustible – Due to its non-combustible nature, mineral wool is safe to use for insulating buildings and prevents spreading of fire through walls.
- Anti-condensation – The mineral wool cavity wall insulation does not form a water vapour barrier through insulation. Thus, it is well able to perform moisture release and prevents condensation around the wall, in the home.
Pre-Installation Checks
Before and after installing the mineral wool cavity wall insulation to your building, there are several things to check out. Two necessary steps to perform before injecting blown insulation are –
- Pre installation survey – A pre-installation survey is a must to determine the requirement of the insulation and degree of effectiveness of the insulation in your house.
- Preparing the site – Before applying this cavity wall insulation, check out all the ventilation openings such as under-floor ventilation openings, flues in the cavity walls that aid in combustion air.
The installation process should be postponed till those openings are sleeved or else they are modified to stop blockage by the insulator.
