Choosing the Right Hardwood Flooring
There is little else that will add to the elegance of your home as hardwood flooring. While it is certainly not a new concept in home design, this type of flooring is unsurpassed in its allure. Whether floors are needed to complete a new home or to update an existing home, hardwoods can be an excellent flooring option. However, choosing the right floor for your home takes careful consideration and the right information.
Hardwood flooring comes in many different varieties, and there are a number of finish options from which to choose. Understanding these options, as well as having a clear concept of the look you desire to achieve, is essential to making the right choice. You will need to determine the type of wood you would like to use and then select the style of wood most suitable for your home.
Type of Wood
Flooring made from hardwood comes in two basic types: solid and engineered. Solid flooring, also referred to as unfinished hardwood, is composed of a single layer of wood cut from slabs of lumber. It has the advantage of offering an abundance of surface material that can be sanded and re-finished many times over its lifespan. The disadvantage to solid wood flooring is that it is negatively impacted by extremes in moisture and temperature; therefore, it may not be ideal for areas such as basements. However, this type of flooring can be used in practically any area of your home.
Engineered or prefinished flooring consists of three to ten layers of wood laminated together. These layers are referred to as plies. Engineered wood typically has a top layer of sufficient depth to allow it to be sanded and re-finished a handful of times. The use of these plies offers greater stability and resistance to the effects of temperature and moisture. As a result, engineered wood flooring may be installed in areas such as a finished basement.
Style of Wood
You have several options when choosing a style of hardwood flooring. The first style option to consider is the species of wood. There is a large assortment of hardwood species from which to choose. You may choose from domestic or exotic species. Each species is unique in grain appearance and hardness. The best way to choose a species of hardwood is to view different samples and identify the one that is most appealing to you.
Style options also include color and width. The color of the flooring you choose will be determined by the species of wood and the stain that is applied. If the natural color of the wood is desired, it is possible to have the wood coated with a clear sealant. The widths offered in wood flooring fall into one of two categories: strip or plank. Strips refer to flooring with boards less than three inches in width while planks are three inches or greater in width. Two factors will determine the width of the hardwoods: personal preference and the size of the room where it will be installed.
Budget Considerations
Once the species and style are selected, it will be important to consider what will fit in your budget. While species and style will affect cost, the final cost of the wood will be determined by the quality of the wood. Hardwood flooring is typically broken up into several different grades. More expensive grades of wood will have fewer knots and natural imperfections. Higher priced flooring generally has fewer color variations between boards as well.
If your budget has more room, specialty options are available. This includes things such as hand-sculpted boards and color-washing. Hand-sculpted boards have intentional marks and grooves that produce a pattern on the flooring. Color-washing refers to a finish process that gives the wood a faded, worn look. With additional funds, you can also get special finishes that produce deeper colors.
When choosing a flooring option for your home, hardwoods are one of the best choices available. There are few other flooring selections that offer the durability and beauty this flooring provides. Understanding the variety of choices available will prepare you to make a decision with which you will be satisfied for years to come.

Would you paint wood trim white with dark hardwood floors?
My downstairs is a little dark.. My house was built early 1900s and the hardwood is still in good shape but I would love to lighten it up a bit by painting the trim and stair rails white. Has anyone done this? How do you think this would look?
Many homes done this way look very nice - but please, if you go this way: seal the wood before you paint it.
Otherwise, at some point in the far future, there may be a very frustrated person (like me) cursing while trying to remove white paint from hardwood that someone painted before sealing the wood. (I'm working on a door frame right now.)
Or that person may be you in the very-near future changing her/his mind.
Since you have to pull off the woodwork before you paint, try a touch of a furniture refinisher in an inconspicous spot to see if you can lighten up the tone of the wood (I've used both Master's and Formby's with great results) without having to paint.
